The belief that we are an inside self creates the illusion that there is an outside object, other or world. When it is seen clearly that the inside self is non-existent, the world as it once seemed to be is also found to be non-existent. All that remains is the seamless intimacy of experience which is sometimes known as love.

How Can We Define Ourselves?
Our self is not known by anything other than its own self.
Rupert,

So you are saying that we are/get ourselves defined by our apparent suffering because when I am not suffering I am clearly not myself at all?

When I have the lightening quick thought to choose the suffering then I am defining who and what I am all about by my own authority not the
universes.

The “I/ego” gets its way by creating in real time a scenerio of suffering and then “I/ego” suffers because of it. Consciousness just gets waybacked out somewhere and loses it’s being until the “I/ego” has it’s way with you. Tolle calls it the pain body.

How come just knowing this is not enough and it takes so long? ACIM says purification is necessary? Is the purification the suffering, then it says that you can be a happy learner or a suffering learner. What is a happy learner? I wouldn’t know what that looks like but I actually feel pretty good today. Dude you kinda rock with this stuff.

Keith

Dear Keith,

Keith: So you are saying Rupert, that we are/get ourselves defined by our apparent suffering because when I am not suffering I am clearly not myself at all?

Rupert: On the contrary, there are many moments when we are not suffering and at those times we are still ourselves. In other words, our self (whatever that is) is present both when there is suffering and when there is not. Therefore we can not be defined by our suffering because suffering is not always present and we are!

And to take your question further, we might ask, “How then can we define ourselves?” Whatever qualities we use to define our self must be present whenever we are present.

So, look in your own experience and ask yourself what qualities are inseparable from the experience of yourself. What do we refer to when we say ‘I?’

The first one is obviously Presence. ‘I, by definition, am.’ There is Being.

Now in order to be able to say from experience, ‘I am,’ we must know that ‘I am,’ that is, we must know our own Being. In other words, to be sure that ‘I am’ (and we are sure that ‘I am’) we must know it. So, knowing is also inherent in or inseparable from ‘I.’

Therefore ‘I’ is both Knowing and Present. What else can we say about it?

Normally we add all kinds of accretions to this Knowing Presence. We assign it a location, a colour, a shape, an age, an gender, a size, beliefs, abilities, characteristics etc. However, all these are intermittent and as ‘I’ is not intermittent, they cannot be qualities that are inherent in our self.

If we look again at this experience of our self, there are other things we can say. For instance, whilst it is undoubtedly knowing and present, we have never experienced its appearance, disappearance, birth, death or change because we, as Knowing Presence, would have to be there, present and knowing, in order to register such an experience. Therefore ever-presence, birthless, deathless and changeless are qualities of our self.

Our self is not known by anything other than its own self. It is ‘I’ that knows that ‘I am.’ The self knows itself by itself. It does not need any other agent, such as a mind or a body, to know itself. Therefore ‘I’ is self-knowing or self-luminous.

Because ‘I’ is the only ‘thing’ that knows itself, it is its own evidence. It cannot be proven by anything other than its own experience of itself.

‘I,’ Knowing Presence, being present and knowing but without objective qualities, cannot move, change or become anything other than what it always already is.

It cannot increase or diminish. Nothing can be added to it or removed from it. It is fullness itself and is therefore known as Happiness or Fulfilment.

It cannot be disturbed, because only an apparent object can be disturbed and it therefore knows itself as Peace.

When any apparent object appears, the object is found to be made only out of Knowing Presence. It gives its own substance intimately and utterly to every appearance. For this reason it is known as Love.

Although it is always itself it can take all possible apparent forms, including the form of ignorance, and freedom is therefore inherent within it.

All these qualities may seem to imply that ‘I’ is one thing and not another – for instance that it is limitless rather then limited – and from an intellectual point of view some may argue that this is an expression of duality. It is not!

These qualities, such as changeless, birthless, deathless, ever-presence etc., are given only in response to the implicit belief some of us have that ‘I’ changes, is born, dies, disappears etc.

If we superimpose no qualities on ‘I’ such as objective, limited, located, birth, death, change, then there is no need to counter this with qualities such as non-objective, unlimited, unlocated, birthless, deathless etc.

If we superimpose no qualities onto Presence, there is no need to define it in a any way. We simply leave it free to be what it is, knowing and being its own self alone, beyond all such defining qualities such as limited or unlimited, changing or unchanging etc.

With warm wishes,

Rupert

Radical denial not good – Adyashanti

“Many spiritual people are involved in a radical denial of what is happening. They want to transcend it, get rid of it, get out of it, get away from it. There’s nothing wrong with that feeling, but the approach doesn’t work because it’s escapism in spiritual clothing. Its wearing spiritual clothing and spiritual concepts, but it is really no different than a drunk in a gutter who doesn’t want to feel pain anymore. When you abide and accept everything completely and fully, you automatically go beyond.”

Impact of Awakening

Auguries of Innocence (W. Blake)

To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour
A Robin Red breast in a Cage
Puts all Heaven in a Rage
A Dove house filld with Doves & Pigeons
Shudders Hell thr’ all its regions
A dog starvd at his Masters Gate
Predicts the ruin of the State
A Horse misusd upon the Road
Calls to Heaven for Human blood
Each outcry of the hunted Hare
A fibre from the Brain does tear
A Skylark wounded in the wing
A Cherubim does cease to sing
The Game Cock clipd & armd for fight
Does the Rising Sun affright
Every Wolfs & Lions howl
Raises from Hell a Human Soul
The wild deer, wandring here & there
Keeps the Human Soul from Care
The Lamb misusd breeds Public Strife
And yet forgives the Butchers knife
The Bat that flits at close of Eve
Has left the Brain that wont Believe
The Owl that calls upon the Night
Speaks the Unbelievers fright
He who shall hurt the little Wren
Shall never be belovd by Men
He who the Ox to wrath has movd
Shall never be by Woman lovd
The wanton Boy that kills the Fly
Shall feel the Spiders enmity
He who torments the Chafers Sprite
Weaves a Bower in endless Night
The Catterpiller on the Leaf
Repeats to thee thy Mothers grief
Kill not the Moth nor Butterfly
For the Last Judgment draweth nigh
He who shall train the Horse to War
Shall never pass the Polar Bar
The Beggars Dog & Widows Cat
Feed them & thou wilt grow fat
The Gnat that sings his Summers Song
Poison gets from Slanders tongue
The poison of the Snake & Newt
Is the sweat of Envys Foot
The poison of the Honey Bee
Is the Artists Jealousy
The Princes Robes & Beggars Rags
Are Toadstools on the Misers Bags
A Truth thats told with bad intent
Beats all the Lies you can invent
It is right it should be so
Man was made for Joy & Woe
And when this we rightly know
Thro the World we safely go
Joy & Woe are woven fine
A Clothing for the soul divine
Under every grief & pine
Runs a joy with silken twine
The Babe is more than swadling Bands
Throughout all these Human Lands
Tools were made & Born were hands
Every Farmer Understands
Every Tear from Every Eye
Becomes a Babe in Eternity
This is caught by Females bright
And returnd to its own delight
The Bleat the Bark Bellow & Roar
Are Waves that Beat on Heavens Shore
The Babe that weeps the Rod beneath
Writes Revenge in realms of Death
The Beggars Rags fluttering in Air
Does to Rags the Heavens tear
The Soldier armd with Sword & Gun
Palsied strikes the Summers Sun
The poor Mans Farthing is worth more
Than all the Gold on Africs Shore
One Mite wrung from the Labrers hands
Shall buy & sell the Misers Lands
Or if protected from on high
Does that whole Nation sell & buy
He who mocks the Infants Faith
Shall be mockd in Age & Death
He who shall teach the Child to Doubt
The rotting Grave shall neer get out
He who respects the Infants faith
Triumphs over Hell & Death
The Childs Toys & the Old Mans Reasons
Are the Fruits of the Two seasons
The Questioner who sits so sly
Shall never know how to Reply
He who replies to words of Doubt
Doth put the Light of Knowledge out
The Strongest Poison ever known
Came from Caesars Laurel Crown
Nought can Deform the Human Race
Like to the Armours iron brace
When Gold & Gems adorn the Plow
To peaceful Arts shall Envy Bow
A Riddle or the Crickets Cry
Is to Doubt a fit Reply
The Emmets Inch & Eagles Mile
Make Lame Philosophy to smile
He who Doubts from what he sees
Will neer Believe do what you Please
If the Sun & Moon should Doubt
Theyd immediately Go out
To be in a Passion you Good may Do
But no Good if a Passion is in you
The Whore & Gambler by the State
Licencd build that Nations Fate
The Harlots cry from Street to Street
Shall weave Old Englands winding Sheet
The Winners Shout the Losers Curse
Dance before dead Englands Hearse
Every Night & every Morn
Some to Misery are Born
Every Morn and every Night
Some are Born to sweet delight
Some are Born to sweet delight
Some are Born to Endless Night
We are led to Believe a Lie
When we see not Thro the Eye
Which was Born in a Night to perish in a Night
When the Soul Slept in Beams of Light
God Appears & God is Light
To those poor Souls who dwell in Night
But does a Human Form Display
To those who Dwell in Realms of day
(William Blake)

Treatment of Oneness vs duality

The DEATH of Jesus exposed and ABSORBED the lie of all religious teaching such as: God AND man, Christ AND us, Light AND darkness, Strength AND weakness, Health AND sickness, Wealth AND poverty, Life AND death, Saint AND sinner, Righteous AND unrighteous, Holy AND unholy, Pure AND impure, Saved AND lost, Redeemed AND un-redeemed, Inheritance AND lack, Spiritual universe AND material/physical universe, Perfection AND imperfection, Immortal AND mortal, Incorruptible AND corruptible, Present AND future, Eternity AND time, Here AND there, Truth AND lie, Cause AND effect, Spirit AND body, Saved AND unsaved, Them AND us etc…

The RESURRECTION of Jesus REVEALED the truth such as: God AS man (as He is so are we, in this world), Christ AS us, Darkness is merely the absence of the awareness of light, Our Father IS the strength of our life, He IS the health of our body, He IS the wealth of all people, There is only One life, and He IS the life of all, He IS the sanctification of all, He IS the righteousness of all, He IS the holiness of all, All are pure by virtue of Oneness, All were saved from the foundation of the world, All possess eternal redemption, All were blessed with all that pertains to life and Godliness, Heaven AS earth, He IS our perfection and completeness, He IS the immortality and incorruptibility of all men, He IS the now-ness of our now, He IS the eternality of our life, He IS the ‘here’ of our existence, He IS the truth of our ‘I AM’, He IS the cause as the effect (us), He IS Spirit slowed down as our visibility, He IS our salvation from before time began, and there is only them AS us and us AS them-Only ONE!

True spiritual vision sees no mortal, corruptible, time, distance, birth, death, sin, sickness, poverty or death etc… but it realizes only the all-ness and oneness of truth. Spiritual consciousness (living from the inside, out) acknowledges that which is merely an ‘appearance’ or a negative looking ‘existence’ as nothing, even less than nothing (Isaiah 40:17), and as merely an ‘arm of flesh’ (II Chronicles 32:8). To truly walk by ‘faith’ and ‘knowing’ is to look away from that which appears to exist, seeing through the single eye, only wholeness, completeness and Oneness. It is to realize that our Father ‘declared the end from the beginning’; and what He has done nothing can be ‘taken away’ or ‘added unto’ it (Ecclesiastes 3:14). Let us raise our spiritual sight to the eternal reality, rather than focusing on that which the Spirit of the Word declares as a ‘no-thing’. It will then unveil the experience of that which has always been our truth of being, and we will truly bear fruit that remains.

When I was 4 … I-Spirit = God

When I was about 4 years old I learned that God is All.
I learned that I couldn’t have a tummy ache coz God couldn’t.
I learned I could heal kitties and puppies too.
I loved Jesus with my whole heart, soul and mind.
But I failed to fully ‘get’ that All means All.
The Allness that was and is God was and is me. All of it!
Oh, I knew it with my mind, else how could I have effected healings?
Now thanks to Neville, Rupert, Joel,
Herb, Adyashanti, Mooji, Papaji, et al
we have newer terms for Allness: Oneness, Omnipresence, Spirit, Soul, Omniscience, Self, Mind, Love, Life, and – oh yes – God.
We can cut through the miasma that is working, working, working its way up to Awareness.
Consciousness is I-Spirit, God.

Let’s stop making religion

One thing I have never understood about religion, whether it appears in the form of religion or not, is the insistence that, once one hops on board, they must immediately adopt dozens of beliefs that they have never thought through, and most certainly do not *actually believe yet. Whether it’s a fundamentalist brand of Christianity that demands you take on a belief in biblical inerrancy, a certain atonement doctrine, or a particular position on eschatology, as well as become immediately anti-LGBTQ rights and militantly pro-life, simply because you believe Jesus is Lord, or whether it’s certain brands of social justice-ism, which demand that, in addition to being pro-equality, one must be fully onboard with certain ideas on gun control, militantly pro-choice, incapable of taking away good ideas from people who may have said something offensive or insensitive at some point in their past, etc., one is forced by these groups to claim to believe things they cannot possibly yet believe. No belief is automatic. No one can just choose to believe things they have not given lengthy amounts of time to thinking through. And when you give in to the pressure to claim a belief in order to be a part of this group or that group, you damage your integrity and soul in ways you cannot possibly imagine.

Having a conservative view on abortion does not mean one must automatically have a conservative view on gun control, nor does having a conservative view on gun control mean that one must have a conservative view on abortion. You can only *truly have a view that you have taken the time to consider, dissect, deconstruct, reconstruct, and think through critically. I don’t care if it’s conservative, liberal, postmodern, enlightenment or religious ideology we are talking about; any group demanding automatic belief in a host of complicated ideas, simply because one agrees with one or two other points a group is making is behaving in a cult-like manner.

This sort of ridiculous thinking is destructive and divisive. It’s born from below, and therefore below us all. Believe what you believe because you actually believe.
Think deeply on all other issues, and don’t bow to pressure, even when it feels like the moral thing to do. You have to think to know what you believe, and when you’re in a place where you are not being given the space to think, it’s probably time to excuse yourself.

Futurist & Preterist Eschatology flawed

I don’t care so much these days whether or not one is a futurist or a preterist in their eschatology, as both have their flaws and weaknesses. Whether you think Jesus returned symbolically in the first century, or whether you believe he will return “any day now” does not matter nearly as much to me as does the manner in which you believe he returned or will return.

If you see the bloody, fiery destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE as the direct handiwork of God, then, quite frankly, I’m glad your version of God isn’t going to return any day now. On the other hand, if, as a futurist, you believe Jesus will soon return and “kill multitudes,” to use Mike Bickle’s words, and literally bathe the earth in a sort of hellfire, then I’m equally glad to know that your prophetic interpretation is flawed and untenable.

Regardless of when you believe Jesus returned or will return, what matters most is how you see him returning. If his second coming contradicts his peaceful, non-violent first coming, then it isn’t Jesus. Period. The Jesus many are expecting to return looks a whole lot more like the anti-Christ they’re told to fear, as does the already-returned Jesus of *some (I know it isn’t all) in the preterist camp. I personally believe that the early church saw most of the “second coming” prophecies as having had their fulfillment in the 70 CE destruction of Jerusalem, but I believe many also mistakenly attributed the work to God, instead of what it really was, which was a lack of willingness to trod the peaceful path laid out by a God who has rejected violence and the sword.

Are you right where you want to be?

HAPPY IRONY
Seeking a breakthrough?
Wanting fullness of God?
Got some clues but
Don’t know where to begin?
Start anywhere – smack dab
In the middle’ll do!!
Set your focus on Oneness
And Love will carry you through!

Suddenly everything is happy
Everyone is divine & lovable
You’re in exactly the most
Perfect place to be.

All the junk is gone now –
‘member that old adage “Gee, have I
Just died and gone to heaven?”
The answer’s a resounding “Yes!!
That’s exactly what you just did!
Died to all – all means all – the junk
Old memories that vexed you
New fears, new dread never again!”

Are you here yet? If not,
Keep . forging . ahead
Willing to relinquish
Willing to receive
And most of all
Willing to live.

(In that last refrain above
I tried to type “willing to love”
But it came out differently:
“Willing to live.” I determined
That “IT” was right!)

Imagine

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace…
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one
